Watch anytime between September 11-21. This is the block where the festival opens up. A radical horror protest against genocide. A magic-less teenager proving herself in roller derby. A dancer’s body changing. A trans man’s plans undone by rain. Friends around a bonfire getting real. A woman turning grief into fight. Seven films that don’t explain themselves, they just go.
These films remind us that creation is always paired with breaking things down. That includes systems and whatever holds us back, including the stories we tell to ourselves about ourselves. We can’t be afraid of a little breakage before we start to remix, remold, and restore what was lost with our new dreams.
The Films
Watermelon In Wintertime
Set in Oakland, Watermelon in Wintertime is a radical horror music video. A being who embodies society’s outcasts is forced to eat surreal winter watermelons, the media fed narratives of war and genocide made visceral. Their journey is a protest that stretches from America to Palestine to Sudan.
Wheels & Roses
In Wheels & Roses, Sahara, a teenager with no magic in a world full of it, lands in the middle of a roller derby league run by spell-slinging skaters. She’s determined to prove she can win without it.
The Second Spring
In The Second Spring, Oakland dancer, teacher, and choreographer Sarah Crowell redefines her relationship with her body and her craft as she moves through menopause, confronting what it means to age as a female athlete.
Flores Del Corazón
In Flores Del Corazón, a human wanders, ponders their identity, and finds their way.
Leo Lets It Rain
In Leo Lets It Rain, Leo, a trans man with undiagnosed ADHD, is on his way to win back his ex-girlfriend when a storm derails everything, forcing him to slow down whether he wants to or not.
Tending To
In Tending To, a group of twentysomethings gather around a midnight bonfire. The conversation starts light and doesn’t stay that way.
Breaking It All
In Breaking It All, the case involving Farah’s best friend’s rape is dismissed. What follows is Farah letting a newfound drive for justice reshape her life.
