Reception

Join us for our FREE Film Festival Reception, an afternoon of gathering, grooving, and getting gloriously wild in the name of community.

Sunday, June 14

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Presidio Theatre, 99 Moraga Ave, San Francisco

We’re taking over the Presidio Theatre Outdoor Plaza to celebrate 26 years of QWOCMAP doing what we do best: showing up, speaking out, and making space on our own terms. This year’s vibe? We Resist & We Roll. That means joy as protest, movement as power, and every space is a dance floor!

Soundtrack by Black and a performance by Sistahs of the Drum, plus treats by Bissap Baobab, Cafe Gabriela, and Koolfi Creamery. And just enough mischief to keep things interesting!

Pull up, show out, and roll with us.

Now that we’ve had several years at the Presidio, we love having an afternoon reception full of performance, sunshine, and play. Community Partners and other organizations will have their tables up and running, it’s a great time for families to connect between screenings where there is ample room to play, and it’s a place to enjoy each other. This year, we’re thrilled to feature Sistahs of the Drum, whose resounding songs will be heard across the park.

Performers

Co-founders Zenju Earthylynn Manuel and Simbwala Schultz began Sistahs of the Drum as a duo in 1998. They brought Congolese rhythms to the community, drumming for rituals, weddings, and other cultural ceremonies in the Bay Area. Roz McMillian, Skye Ward, and Micia Mosely joined soon after, followed by Rosetta Saunders, Mar Stevens, Angela Niles and Sandy Mills, who brought their West African drumming experience. After passing on the lineage, the founding members retired from the group and tuned the leadership over to Mar who has continued to lead it with strength and dedication.

Current members are Mar Stevens, Sandy Mills, Shawn Nealy-Oparah, La Tanya Carmical, Rosetta Saunders, Mya Jonisha Cross, and LaFonda Traore. Former members are Anaya Gamble Hill, Charline Gumbs, Salina Gray, Jilian Lyles, Nina Roberts, and Cynthia Sherren.
