Colonialism has always sought to displace us from deep ecologies. To define human beings as if we were not intimately connected to the environment that now needs “saving” and not its original stewards. These films remind us that queer and trans Indigenous people and African diasporic peoples are spiritually interwoven with the land that forms the basis of our resistance. We wanted this screening to remind us that we are sacred and the creators of new worlds.
The Films
Deneege Leł Ghu Kk’ots’eedeneeyh Te Heł Hoozoonh Ts’e Denots’edeneeyh
Narrated in Denaakk’e, the film follows a group of Dené women reviving the near lost practice of brain-tanning hides, a centuries-old tradition tied to the health of the land and community.
STANDING TREE
Standing Tree draws on the symbolism of Colombia’s national tree, the wax palm, called “trans” in Spanish, to follow Afro-Colombian trans leader Magdalena Morales as she pursues justice through music.
¡Quba!
¡Quba! introduces us to Adela Hernandez, Cuba’s first transgender government official, and El Mejunje, the cultural hub where art and performance are rewriting what Cuban society can look like.
