From award-winning filmmaker Madeleine Lim, JEWELLE: A Just Vision is a 64-minute documentary celebrating the extraordinary life and work of Jewelle Gomez — novelist, playwright, poet, journalist, artist, and activist.

From Black Power in late-1960s Boston, to AIDS activism in mid-1980s New York, to Marriage Equality in early-2010s San Francisco, Jewelle’s life and work are intertwined with decades of queer history and social movements. An Ioway and Wampanoag, African American and Cape Verdean, femme lesbian, Jewelle has spent her life using art as activism and storytelling as a way to reclaim history, imagine new futures, and create space for voices too often left out of the story. Her groundbreaking novel The Gilda Stories helped shape Afro- and Indigenous futurisms, while her plays, poetry, and activism continue to explore queer identity, ancestry, community, resistance, and the transformative power of imagination.

Pride is a celebration, but it is also part of a much longer story. The night before we gather to celebrate Pride, we invite you to pause and remember the generations of LGBTQIA2S+ people, artists, activists, and organizers whose courage helped build the communities we have today.

JEWELLE: A Just Vision offers an intimate, joyful, and hope-filled look at one remarkable life while reminding us that our stories are powerful, our history matters, and our vision for the future is ours to create. Whether you're deeply familiar with queer history or are just beginning to explore it, this evening is an opportunity to learn, reflect, connect, and celebrate the stories that brought us here. Come for the film. Stay for the conversation. Leave with a little more history, and a little more hope. This event is presented by Austin, MN Pride as part of our Queer History Month programming, with generous sponsorship from the Minnesota Historical Society and hosted at The Historic Paramount Theatre, part of Austin Area Arts.
