LBTQIA+ BIPOC

QWOCMAP is a LBTQIA+ people of color organization.

Quick Start

  1. 1

Our focus on filmmaker development makes accurate and authentic stories possible.

  2. 3

QWOCMAP was founded, in part, to address the gender inequity and sexism in the film industry.

  3. 2

We give our community the tools to create new films that show the dynamic of different gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations across race, ethnicities, cultures, and nationalities.

About Our Practice

Why It Matters

It is no secret who dominates the film industry, in the past and the present. Those who control access and participation also control deep societal narratives that shape worldviews and beliefs.

Inequity behind the lens distorts what we see onscreen: girls are sexualized, older women are maligned and invisible, rape and sexual violence are plotlines; disabled people are villainized; LGBTQIA+ people are targets of punchlines, stereotypes, and hate; and people of color, especially queer and trans Black people, are demonized and marked for death.

QWOCMAP’s focus on filmmaker development is what makes accurate and authentic stories possible.

Our Work

How We Respond

Who We Serve

Who We Serve

We are led by and serve transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and intersex people of color (47%).

We give our community the tools to create new films that show the dynamic of different gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations across race, ethnicities, cultures, and nationalities.

What We Do

What We Do

QWOCMAP was founded, in part, to address the gender inequity and sexism in the film industry. 25+ years later, misogyny and transmisogyny in the film trades remain an ongoing problem.

This is especially notable with who gets opportunities, or even the ability to handle lights, sound, and camera equipment. It has an impact not only on who gets to be a director, but who gets to be a cinematographer, editor, and more.

Therefore, we focus on concrete technical skills, and practical artistic knowledge and techniques in our Filmmaker Development program.

Equitable Opportunities

Gender Justice

Gender identity and gender expression also play a role in access to opportunities, yet these inequities impact transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people of color in different ways.

To address this, QWOCMAP tailored a filmmaking workshop for people of color on the Butch-FTM spectrum in 2005, and offered a 2010 workshop focused on Gender Identity and Gender Expression, Sex, Sexism, and Sexuality. In the current climate, compelling and just depictions of trans+ people are crucial to our very existence.

We believe in the visions and voices of our sibsters, brothers, sisters, siblings, and niblings: LBTQIA+ BIPOC weaving connections in the spirit of community, growth, cross-pollination, and justice.

Homophobia and transphobia are based in misogyny and sexism. Feminism needs transgender people, because we are women, we have a feminine gender presentation, and we are born into bodies labeled as female.
