About Our Practice

Why It Matters

Why It Matters

We know that communities of color disproportionately bear the burden of environmental pollution and injustice. We see the impact that it has on the land we inhabit, our waterways, our food, our health, as well as non-human people and other beings on the planet.

We are fortunate that our offices and Film Festival venue are in the Presidio U.S. National Park, in San Francisco.

We can see the Golden Gate bridge from our offices, are close to views of the Bay, and have been blessed by visits from our neighbors, hawks, coyotes, and great Blue herons.

Land Back

QWOCMAP knows that ending oppression also ends our disconnection from the land. It is no accident that Indigenous peoples the world over protect the biodiversity and ecosystems of the lands that they have stewarded. This is why Land Back is crucial to the survival of humanity.

And also key are the roles that queers and trans people have played in our cultures, and how we seek to restore our connections with the land, throughout the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the world over, we are being called.

Sustainability

Zero Waste

At Our Film Festival

At Our Film Festival

As QWOCMAP grows, we continue our steadfast commitment to sustainable and earth-friendly practices by recycling and composting during all of our programs, and for the duration of our three-day Film Festival.  For almost a decade, we have maintained an average of 97% diversion rate.

We provide compostable utensils, cups, plates, and napkins so that we can move toward zero waste. We use compostable cups at our Water Station. We do not serve bottled water (as per SF Department of the Environment regulations for large events), or use vessels with BPA or other endocrine disruptors. We encourage everyone to bring their own containers made from stainless steel, glass, or other materials. Our water station is filled with water from the Hetch Hetchy reservoir, which is fluoridated. We understand the concerns about fluoride in tap water, but we are unable to filter water at this time.

Please help us uphold our commitment to a sustainable and healthy environment by following disposal protocols at Film Festival events.

Disability Justice

As environmental injury and severe chemical sensitivity increase, it is important that we examine the intersection of environmental justice and disability justice. Please refer to the “Fragrance Free at the Film Festival” page.
